Photo Credit: Flickr I am sure that I am not the only one. As a matter of fact, I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Because I have had discussions with people about this very topic. What am I talking about? I am talking about the businesses, people and those so called "personalities" who based on their actions are only interested in serving those in need when it only benefits them. It kills me when these people use someones misfortune for a photo opportunity or as additional bullet to include in their Bio's or resumes.
Now I know of many people and organizations who could care less if the masses knew that they were going to hold a fundraiser, donate money to an organization, or go speak to a group of underprivileged youths. But then again, I have worked with people in the past and witnessed people throw random (and I do mean random) fundraisers full of glamor and glitz, but lacking a truly giving heart.
As founder and executive director of a non-profit I know how hard it is to operate with little to no funds. I also understand the disappointment one experiences when your foundation/organization is used as a photo opportunity to raise someone else's platform. It just bothers me to know that someone has spent $5,000 to put together a fundraiser and they ended up $2,500 in the hole leaving the benefiting organization with nothing.

What actually got me writing this post is the recent earthquake that struck Haiti. Being the "Do Gooder" that I am :) , I see absolutely nothing wrong with someone taking charge and starting a fundraiser for survivors of the quake or for any cause. But, what I do find questionable is throwing a party, gala, or some other type of event to collect...hmmm lets just say "coats". I use coats as an example because I would rather not say what this person said. But basically what I am trying to say is, why would you collect items like "coats" for the Haitian Quake survivors when obviously the most immediate need is Medical Supplies, Food, and Water??? This is a conversation that was in my time line on Twitter. Once again, its disappointing to see people use another persons misfortune for self serving reasons, just so thet can say "Well I did this, and this...blah blah blah...". Granted, this is nothing knew and celebrities and politicians have always done this but it still doesn't make it right.

There has been so many people and orgs who are using the situation in Haiti for their own personal gain and PR opportunity. I find this very sad, even though I know that Haiti needs help. Very well written post.
I agree with your post and it came to my mind when I saw the outpouring of support to the Haitian people.
I think those who started their org should have just supported those who had established ones.
I hate when they regard the Haitians as my people. Stop it.
