Choices...

I have reached a point in my life where I need to make some important decisions. This poem by Nikki Giovanni, "Choices" captures exactly what I am feeling...

if i can't do
what i want to do
then my job is to not
do what i don't want
to do

it's not the same thing
but it's the best i can
do

if i can't have
what i want . . . then
my job is to want
what i've got
and be satisfied
that at least there
is something more to want

since i can't go
where i need
to go . . . then i must . . . go
where the signs point
through always understanding
parallel movement
isn't lateral

when i can't express
what i really feel
i practice feeling
what i can express
and none of it is equal
i know
but that's why mankind
alone among the animals
learns to cry

I think the true test of a person's maturity is the ability to make sound decisions in difficult situations. I love that you quoted Nikki Giovanni. She is the ultimate writer to me. I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was in college. I was so overwhelmed that I cried (I felt like a dufus). Anyway, I wish you all the best with the decisions you have to make. You can do it because you are fabulous!

I love Nikki GioVanni. My favorite collection of hers in Love Poems. I just took the book off the shelf. You've inspired me to read my favorite, "I Wrote a Good Omelet."

I followed you here from Twitter. It was well worth it!

Love Nikki Giovanni! Great poem. Another one of hers that I really enjoy is Resignation.
